I have a character with an armature modifier and subsurf. The skin is one material and no texture. The normals are all okay. If I make it Traceable the whole surface becomes mottled with a mosaic pattern of small random sized squares. The same material applied to a cube behaves normally. If I turn off Traceable it behaves normally. It has to be something about the object, but I can’t figure it out. Has anyone else seen this?

You have more than one face occupying the same space. Make sure you don’t have two copies of the same mesh, and try removing doubles.
That was it! Thanks. I got rid of 20,000 extra vertices. I guess I hit Shift D one too many times.
