Menger Sponge in Blender.

Alright… I was alittle bored… (Just getting over a sickness)

So I decided to create a menger sponge 100% in blender, and here are the results…

And one done in Luxrender with a tiny bit of tonemapping in Violet…

Cheers,
~Marslyr

that is awesome,
how did you cut so many holes in the mesh?
please tell me. small tute.
booleans never work for me ever, how did you do this.
I wish booleans said: subtract selected, add selected, merge selected, delete selected, instead of the nearly unworkable rot (rotten bunch of apples) Blender has now!
holey mesh! how did you do that.
m.a.
ps. that’s just plain cruel (in a jealous kind of way)
doing it with luxrender too, how long to render?

Hey thanks!

Let me just say that it Wasn’t booleans, as blender booleans always throw me into a loop :frowning:

I’ll put together a quick tutorial in alittle bit… it’ll be up 'afore nightfall (for me anyways  )

holey mesh!
This caused everyone to look at me… It was very funny

The lux render was about 3hrs…

Cheers,
~Marslyr

Alright… Its not real pretty, but its just a mini-tutorial

Menger_Mini_Tutorial

*Slight typo, first line should be, cube, not cuve…

Cheers,
~Marslyr

Marslyr, thanks for that. good little tutorial. great use of arrays. m.a.

As somebody on this forum once said:

“In 3D modeling, don’t model a hole in your doughnut, model a doughnut around your hole.”

I think it looks great.
I like the third picture the best.

MD

pretty cool…

the blender internals look like they were rendered in indigo

the lux one looks blue

hi, finally drew this…

…in Blender…following your tute.
m.a.

Hey guys!

@ MasterDomino
Heh… That’s great… maybe I should model a doughnut
I’m also a fan of that material…

@daBlendaNewbie!
Thanks for the input…

@ Isidore

the blender internals look like they were rendered in indigo
I’m gonna assume that that’s a compliment so thanks…

And it was my intention for the lux one to be blue… (hence the sickness  )

@Meta-Androcto
Wow, That looks waaay cool, is it nodes, or “Freestyle”?
Maybe its your turn for a mini-tut?
Glad you could follow it, though…

Cheers,
~Marslyr

I was able to go one level deeper. My machine (quad core, 3Gig) does get sluggish then…
However, my feeble attempts to produce a picture of the same quality as yours fails due to lack of skills. Any pointers on how yu set up your scene?

@Marslyr,
I too like your lighting set up.
it took a while to come close.
the lighting in yours is very good!

Small tute:
Follow Marslyr’s tute to make the Menger Cube.
Turn on edges. edge settings 255 black.
Select the world texture settings, background White.
Select the cube, add a Blender texture (Any will do), remove all color so it is white.
Render.
Open in favorite image editor, Gimp or ps or any that support layers & overlay/screen.
overlay desaturated Paper/Cardboard to your liking.
Save.
Probably could have done the overlay in the world texture settings or Compositor.

@UglyMike, any chance of a render? that would look cool.

m.a.

Will try one this weekend with your mini-tutorial…
(and one with Marslyr’s setup if he posts it…)

I managed to get a level deeper no amazing render but I am happy. now I will try to get one more level.http://img3.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/c3fdd2e25a.png

Here’s a 30 minute Indigo render.
Just Blender 2.45, standard Indigo install with basic Bledigo (.py in scripts, /preview in Indigo, path in .conf) default Blender material slightly green with one sun lamp
First Indigo render I ever made. Looks like I’m gonna use it a lot… (pointers on how to use photobucket with thumnails will also be appreciated First time for this too…)

lets make this a contest. see who can get the best render at the highest LOD

Hey guys!

Wow, it really looks great with one more LOD… ( /me wishes for a better computer :stuck_out_tongue: )

My lighting set-up is something I’ve worked at for a while, it based on numrous “Studio” setups,

It features a curved plane, as a backdrop,

Then 2-5 area lights with a light blue color, and low intensity, above the object.
And the same but a light red, to the upper left of the object.

Just behind each set of lights is a colored plane (the same color as the lights), with a small emit value, this is for reflections mainly…

:Example of set-up:

@ Meta-Androcto
Cool tut, I followed it, the result looks pretty cool… :stuck_out_tongue:

@ UglyMike
Wow, Sweet render, it really shows off the LOD…
Sadly can’t help you with photo-bucket as I’ve never used it… :frowning:

@ oblenob
That could be alot of fun, do you think we should formally make one in the contest forum, or just informally post renders and stuff here?

Cheers,
~Marslyr

Informal I guess cause at some point someone will come along and brag about a 7LOD cube that they made with a meggawhizzer processor

Thanks for the tutorial. The only thing I did differently is added a texture to each cube to add more (fake) levels of detail. I lit it strangely to make it somewhat similar to this one on Wikipedia:

Hey,

@ oblenob
Sounds great!

Now go make some cool renders everyone!

@ Harley
Wow, that looks cool, interesting lighting as well,

I’ve got some guesses, but would you mind telling me how you made/got the texture?

And now some recent renders of mine...

A gold menger in luxrender... :D

Then a couple renders of a "Sierpinski square-based pyramid"... its kinda related :D

They were constructed in a similar but not identical manner... ;)

I also found this animated .gif that shows the first 5 levels of detail of the menger: [Animated .gif](http://www.pure-mirage.com/images/Menger/Menger%20Sponge%20Animation%202.gif)

And this amazing animation of a cube that goes to a level 9 sponge... its worth a watch...
