Mental Ray classroom ..light test

that is the problem with all those fake GI tricks, the work global wide.
Sometimes this is perfectly fine for simple scene but a room such the one
you work on shows that fast fake GIs will on their side require a lot of time
to fine tune.

You might want to look into the ability to have materials react more or less
with AO - this can be set inside the material.

True i always forgot about that one … Or maybe negative lights could help as well …but AO interaction in material settings will be the easier way .
Thanks cekuhnen good to have you here  !

Also don’t forget to add bounce lights and you can make use of layer locks to prevent bounce lights
to affect objects you do not want to use.

That is something what i will have to play with

Hi finally i had some time to do this … here is my render . I am quite happy with it but i am sure that somebody will be able to make it look even better .
here is the pic and the blend file

Thought I’d post my render of the file. Played with it when it first hit this thread and only made a few minor adjustments to it. The textures need a lot of work, but it was a nice experiment.

OK, and here is my quick attempt to render your file marnal. I’ve played with lights. It’s not perfect, but anyway…

Designly looks good. Is just a sun lamp and AO ? Did you put any area lamps in the windows ?

Czarek I like on your render that its more contrast than mine. Did you make all the lights stronger ? Only think what bother me are those 2 bright spots on the wall near the windows. (maybe on the pillars …i dont know how its called )
btw what do you think about about those area lights what i put on the floor where the sun is hitting it. i wonder if we should change it.
Maybe make them smaller or put some more on the tables where sun hitting them . Or take them off completely

I agree, this two bright spots are far to bright.
But they are exists in some real world examples. Here are photo taken this morning at 6am.
Window is on the west side of the building, the sun was on opposite side (east) at the moment when photo was taken. Without any direct light the bright spot on the wall near to the window exist. This white spot will be more intensive when the sun will be on the same side (west side of the building):

Here is file after my modification(zipped with 7z):
https://rapidshare.com/files/459546533/classroom_1.7z
I have done following modification:
-replaced all area light on the floor by single spot lamp bellow the floor
-replaced all windows area lamp by single area lamp in the same position where is the sun.
-modified sun/AO/EL settings, energy, color
-added spot lights to brighten the wall with windows.
-added extra spot on top of the classroom.
-changed little floor and wall material.

Hi Czarek77 you are right about the white spots. Thanks for the info and the blend file . I was playing with your light setup a bit more and used some bits from it on the model of my apartment

http://img849.imageshack.us/img849/3447/classroomz.jpgI had a wee go at this with Thea render, here is my results if anyone’s interested

Seaner looks good but its cheating to use Thea render  … btw some direct light would nice too…and ceiling little bit too reflective.

btw after looking on your Thea render and then on my BI …my BI render look so flat :frowning:

why is this in News and why is it that no one still used Cycles on it?

namekuseijin Why its in the news ? Its probably my fault i just start it here to ask if somebody would be keen to have go on it . But then its kinda start going .I asked couple times in the thread if it can be moved somewhere else but nothing happend :frowning:

And why no cycles … at the beginning i want it to see what we will be able to do just with BI but ok lets use anything …
PS i would still love to see some nice BI

Cycles will be BI at some point in the future. BI as it is is not really meant for those kind of scenes.

True True … but still worth of trying i think … i am just trying to understand lighting a bit more
And wouldn’t cycles be a bit too slow for animations ? (probably getting a bit off topic …and if its still in heavy development so might be to early to talk about it anyway)
