Merlin's Hat

This is my first WIP…I always randomly start and stop projects, so most WIPS of mine are WIPS for a looooong time.

But this one has the potential to be used in a school project. Much better chance of being finished. Anyways, I would really appreciate any thoughts and criticisms my fellow BArs would have. One thing in particular - it is a night image, but may be extra dark on CRT monitors. If you cannot see parts of the image let me know.

things I think I should work on and planning to do.

  1. titles on books
  2. flasks/etc on shelf
  3. rework the hat material to look less plasticy
  4. Lighting needs work
  5. Other thoughts on lighting, modeling, composition, etc?

On my monitor the image is too dark to see anything. But I’m sure you’re off to a great start. Keep up the good work.

I don’t have a CRT, and I know I’m calibrated correctly too, but it’s still a bit dark. You can probably get away with quite a bit more light if you tone the moon light a bit cooler, but that’s just a quick thought, it might not work for this.

well, I am not a 100% correct calibrated, but rather close… and on 2 monitors the image is very dark, but what I can see looks very very good

For books…

  1. The walls are really nice in detail, but the window hole seems to be cut too perfectly, more ruined edges.
  2. The stars look too solid, more halo here.
  3. The ‘magic spots’ I think would look better if the center of each would be a little brighter and these could be placed with some random offset from the main curve/path to look more dynamic.

So I’ve gotten a little further on the project, but any artwork to come out of this might come a little later - the project is due Friday. :spin: My (very rough) proposed poster layout is attached (Did I say this was going to be a poster?) So I get to try printing this stuff too.

Actually, only two parts need Blender usage, the flask thingy and the book cover. I may need to rethink this though, as I’m sort of afraid my computer will melt down when I render the flask thing. (Does anybody else think 64 C for a Phenom quad is a bit high? Any suggestions for a short term fix before I can get another/better fan(s)?)

The other image is a gimped version of the original render…is that an appropriate brightness/contrast? I kind of like the muted color tones. except for the “magic”…hmm

I’m guessing my monitor isn’t calibrated correctly; it’s not exactly in the best of rooms for lighting either.

Thanks for the help and suggestions.
@VersusOm - I would have totally missed the book thing, good catch!
I appreciate the comments. Keep them coming!

Here is a quick little paint over I did. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not a color/tone expert, so take what you want or even ignore it completely. Let me know if you need me to explain what exactly I did with it.

Entering part two of this little drama. (I’m spending waaay too much time working on this.)

The flask background for a part of the poster. It printed okay, so it probalby won’t change, but I’d still like to here what the community thinks of it, any glaringly obvious (except to me :eyebrowlift2:) improvements I could make…

*note - the text shows up better on the printed version than here. and for size reference, this is about full page (8.5 x 11) size.

I love the boottle , excellent rendering. Make the back text a bit more blurred for realism.
