Mesh faces: Smooth vs Solid

Hello. I have a trouble when setting mesh faces to smooth:

“OLEG” part is set to have solid faces and has correct coloring.
“KORSAK” part is set to be smooth and has a lot of wrong colored faces.
The only idea I have - is to subdivide edges smoothly… but to get same smooth coloring - there are so much of edges that my PC (AMD Phenom II x6 1090T + 8GB 1600Mhz DDR3) can’t even zoom scene smoothly.

Any ideas? Thanks

i believe an edge split modifier might correct it also?
