Mesh hair

I’m trying to make decent mesh hair. I want to use mesh instead of particles so I can export to other render engines. I’ve tried converting particles to mesh with not very satisfactory results. The hair on this character has a simple colour map and alpha map. Not sure what direction to take next. Work on the textures? Use more detailed meshes? Any advice would be appreciated.

The overall modeling looks fine. I think you just need an alpha map to make it look more like hair.
