Messy Desk (Update 7/8)

This a desk modelled and rendered in blender. I’m going for a realistic looking desk and suggestions on making it look more realistic

That’s a really good start. I would suggest having more lighting (as in a backlight) and maybe subsurfing a bit more. Also, try ambient occlusion. It will look much more realistic with that.

Or global illumination =D

Very good start!

The corner of the shelf looks weird.
The white out next to the stapler is way to small.
The photo has all this black stuff on it. If that was ment to look like it was broken why would the frame break like glass?

Sorry if I sound mean but I am just pointing out the things that could be improved.

Very well done though!

That’s most probably just the shadow from the robot.

The open books pages needs to be a lot smoother. The car looks lite it’s made of metal but it would look better if it were of plastic. But otherwise it’s really good.

i used Tyaedalis’s suggestion which really improved the lighting, but i’m still going to play with the settings some more. i worked on the book, car, and whiteout, but still havent figured out what is causing the the weird effect on the shelf.

could you post the blend so i could look at the shelf? the scene looks much better with ambient occlusion!

some things, like the stapler, are too smooth, and need sharper edges.

Much nicer lighting now. Just a bit much image noise.

Your problem with the desk can be fixed with autosmooth, which is here:

Matey could be right about autosmooth. I’m guessing that would be due to bad triangles & subsurfing.

Or you might have some excess vertices - try remove double.

Wow, great work. Loads of modelling and texturing done here:D great work. With some improved lightning it will be really cool!
Here’s my room at the moment :stuck_out_tongue:
For less grainy render, increase the AO or GI settings. The led of the little clock looks odd. The left bottem stripe of the 2. If you have a cd-rack, perhaps the cd’s will be less disorientated. IMO the cd’s could all have a slightly different zrot but I guess this is too messy.

On my desk there are loads of wires (monitor, mouse, keyboard, powersupply etc.) these can easily be made with a curve (set to 3D in editbuttons) and parent it to a curvecircle. Then make the curve use the curvecircle as a bevel. That will increase the realism I think.

Good luck!

Thanks Matey and Roger. The autosmooth fixed the wierd problem with the desk, and the increase in the AO decreased the noise. I added cords to the scene and fixed the clock texture. The stapler I was modelling was smooth, so that’s why it looks that way. I agree that i should sharpen the metal that shoots the staples. I might consider adding more objects once i’ve fixed the ones i already have.

What renderer did you use?

i guess u r still using textures for the details on the toy car. i would suggest modelling them…i guess every one has a car model, u can use any one of urs…

the default one that comes with blender

I would model more details on the car, but my computer is ancient.:frowning:

the two post-its above the car look like they are floating in the air, as well as the one on highest up on the lamp, but otherwise, amazing detail

are you talking about the sticky notes

Nice job, too bad I can’t make renders like that…

Crits:The base and fixture for the lamp on the left are too bulky; try to scale them down a little. You also overused subsurf on the lamp, remove or reduce the subsurf. Also, the sticky notes aren’t attached to anything.

i added texture to the notes, which are supposed to attached to the CD rack. i’m tried to rework the notes so it would look that way but may have to move to another spot. also, i reduced the size of the lamp.
