In wikipedia’s metaball article there is a picture of two differently coloured metaballs merging together, made in Bryce. Is this possible in Blender? It seems I can either make them have different materials (if I rename them so they belong to different “families”) or make them merge, not do both at the same time.

I know this is possible to be done with PovRay (An open source ray tracer). but I don’t thing it is possible directly in blender with the current exporter exporter script.
