This is a pretty awesome development for cycles.
9 polygons gives this…
using the dev build found here:
http://www.graphicall.org/1178
Lots of testing to do but this is a really nice result right out of the box. Impressive given how hard it is to get good displacement out of Vray and the like.

Really cool landscape; is it from a sculpt displacement map or from a lanscape generator ?

It’s generated with Worldmachine
The final terrain looks like it may as well come out of Vue or Terragen 3. I do agree, the microdisplacement that’s coming would likely rank as among the best new features committed to Cycles in the last couple of years at least.
It will be nice to be able to fill scenes with displacement that’s accurate to the Cycles material in question (as opposed to having to use the modifier).

This looks like the adaptive subdivision, which is part of Opensubdiv. Do you have details on the actual technology being implemented?

No, it’s not viewport like opensubdiv, it’s render time subdiv, like the subdiv you get with PRman or Vray. This image is made of a sheet of 9 polygons but at render time it’s a polygon per pixel. Computationally more intense than opensubdiv though I am not really a maths nerd, I’m just playing with it.

Oh, I see. That is very nice.
I love the test render, btw. It looks awesome.

More micropoly goodness…
Heightfield made with Terragen and world machine.

The third one especially looks good, but I’m not really sure why the lensflare has to be there.
Depending on how large the displacement images are, you might want to give the impression of higher resolution by having secondary textures that are also part of the displacement.

Very nice landscape renders! I recognize the erosion map output from World Machine, great software.
Micropoly displacement, fantastic, I’ll have to check it out!

Looks great!
How do you make the maps? I’m not asking for a tutorial, but about you give me some clue or keywords to know how to look about it.
Edit:
ok, “World Machine”, “Terragen”, sorry for having quick read the thread. Any other? OpenSource?

Not really that much in open source for landscape generators (if any. I bought world machine so long ago I can’t remember how much it was but I seem to remember it wasn’t crazy amounts of money. It’s really a fantastic piece of software.

Hi grsaaynoel,
fantastic pictures!!!
Can you share a scene or maybe a little Tutorial?
For those who do not have Worldmaschine or Terragen.

I’ll try to get something up soon.
In the meantime, I just followed the instructions in the link on the first post (remembering to get this development build too as it’s not actually in blender proper as yet :))
…
Blender build with the new micro displacement feature for Blender Cycles.
New settings:
(You need to enable Render tab >> Feature Set >> Experimental first.)
Render tab >> Performance panel >> Geometry Cache
Data tab >> Displacement panel >> Subdivision / Subdivision Rate
