i really enjoyed the movie, and im showing some love ![]()
Nice model but he has some features that make him look a little weird (or creepy) :
- divergent squint in the eyes
- smile not affecting the lower eyelids
- iris pattern separated in 2 circles
Other than the uncanny valley factors, here are some critiques I would have:
- his skin is much brighter than in the movie, looks more Chinese than Mexican
- he has a dimple on his right chin (remember in the movie he only has one on his right chin). Plus this additional dimple looks like not actual geometry but just a normal map trick, which is noticeable because it’s on the edge of the face
- he has short legs compared to the original
- his pants are going too high up, making him look a little fat. They’re never high up like this in the movie
- why the red nose? Combined with the fat appearance and crazy look in the eyes, he starts to look like an alcoholic. I don’t find the original Miguel to have a red nose in the movie.
- the general resemblance of the face could use some more work
Looks good enough, though I do absolutely agree with the points of ChameleonScales. The first image showing him up close looks a lot creepier than the render below.
But I also want to add that I think making 3D fan art of a character that was already in 3D (especially pixar/disney) is kind of an unfortunate position to be in unless you try to severally alter the original style.
It’s very likely always going to either look worse than the original or at best like a 1:1 copy, which can also be applauded for the execution but is completely unable to stand on it’s own.
Don’t take this as me completely trashing your result or intentions though
Apart from that, definitely keep at it and I wish you all the best for your next model!
