Hello everyone,
I am an absolute noob to blender and yesterday I have built this simple simulation
of a milling process.
However I am not really satisfied of the result:
the metal, looks so artificial and plain, i would like it to look more realistic.
The “tool” is not even looking like the real one, the real tool should look more like a rotating drill bit, but I was unable to generate it using screw…
My main concern is however how to “mill”, I tried the boolean, and difference does work when i apply difference between the cube and the cylinder, however is not permanent, so I cant see any “material removal” from the piece.
I would really appreciate if someone could give me some hints or point me to a specific tutorial…
Many thanks
first you want to have a drill bit
i cannot find the tut on this model
may be someone else can remember what the link is!
but it is easy to do with the screw modifier
http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:2.6/Manual/Modifiers/Generate/Screw
begin to do this part and get a nice profile
apply it then re model the 2 ends to what you want
then you can contiue with you animation
happy blendering
Here is my thought on removing material as you cut.

Make a plate to be cut with cut geometry built-in with shiny cut surface. Make a second object that covers the cut. The second object was built and separated from the original. This ensures perfect fit. No seams will show.
As you animate the cutter along the edge, use Blender cross-section material to erase the “cut” part trailing the cutter.
uhm thanks all for the explanations
i am not yet sure i understood all but since i started using blender only 2 days ago i think i lack knowledge…
i need to study more before trying to improve this model…
[QUOTE=amaurot;2276990]…of a milling process.
I have had a lot of luck using a transparency texture to make things go away. Key framing the texture’s opacity (in your case from right to left) will achieve the effect you want.
@ amaurot
Keep us posted, as a former machinist I am very interested in a method to simulate realistic metal cutting in blender. Good luck
PS: I rendered out your animation and it reminded me of a few years back when I machined a block of D2 tool steel for a forming die and forgot to turn my coolant on. There were a LOT of sparks, followed by the sound of the carbide end mill shattering. Good times…

Hey I am looking for the same animation of MEtal Chips coming out of material as it is cutting.
hevent had any sucess with that.
any help will be useful.
Thanks
