Mirror modifier not working properly (pic included)

Notice the mirrored side all crooked, not following the X axis. Hope this helps other people too.

In object mode (with your model selected), press Shift-C to center the cursor, press the Center Cursor button in the Mesh tab, and finally press Ctrl-A.
