'Mobile' Phone WIP

Cover

WIP for Steampunk : New History challenge on 3Dmodels (a.k.a Hum3D). Originally started writing on the forum there but thought of moving it here for ease of editing.

Actually already started around April, but due to some things just started writing this recently. Aside from being busy, I had a rough time finding concept/idea that I like. Initially wanted to do an airship, then there’s idea to make some kind of helicopter, up to a simple but with complicated details clockwork unit. I wanted to have some balance between cool silhouette/shape and ability to show off details (gears, etc.) but seemed unable to get a satisfying one (plus tried to make something unique). There have been like 3-4 other concepts/blockouts.

One day when browsing on my computer, I happened to saw this past work (which is a part of March of Robots entries in 2023) :

The upper part reminds me of old telephone with separate speaker/receiver and microphone/transmitter unit :

I felt like this could make a great concept, so I decided to blend those two ideas : old telephone fitted on a small walker robot. Equipped with some anntenae, the unit will be a ‘mobile’ phone, can be easily taken to everywhere you need! That, and add some steampunk elements to it. Finally, a satisfying concept, yay.

For the WIP, at first I planned to just make some snapshots of my progress and then post them all together with the finished work on my portfolio later on to make it simpler, but then I think would be better to have some on-going documentation of the work so decided to make one.

Here are the rough blockouts (front and rear view) :

Detailing progress on the phone and walker unit :

Also started to blockout scene / environment, thinking of a view from a train cabin to show its ‘mobile’ function / ability :

I guess it’s time to steampunk-ify it more now, more updates later.

I think I’m finally done with the phone walker detailing :

Some details close-ups :

The dial, speaker/receiver, bell, and leg parts are made separately and added/positioned onto the main models as collection for ease of making and editing.

Next, modeling and detailing the scene and whatnot …

Scene modeling is finally done ! Might still tweak a bit on some of the models, but this is the overall complete scene.

Borrowed some models from Sketchfab for the train/locomotive and the city/buildings, airship is taken from past work.

Around 3-4 days left to try not to wreck this with textures and lighting !

You can also view more details on the submission page. I might do a separate post on the Finished Project section later on (EDIT : see here for the post).
