modeling macbook pro

I’m trying to get an aluminum macbook pro 15" inch modeled. I googled/binged images but that didn’t help much since each picture is a different size and distance. So I thought going to apple’s site for dimensions would help. It did but they don’t say how thick the lid is.

Is there anyone with that computer that can measure it for me? or the body of it? thanks!

Hi,

here is my keyboard.

wow, thats really detailed and shiny

you can get it as a Color & Displacement map from apple.com. (sing it to the melody of ‘You can get it if you really want…’)

just one question, for each key did you make it one or many objects?

its one single plane

woah! look at this. This render has so many artifacts it isn’t even funny. I tried recalc’ing normals and removing doubles. I have no idea what to do :frowning:

have a wank… it’ll become great =)

yea, sorry about that, wrong file >.>. the right file is up now

and what’s a wank?

another word for cheese on toast in the morning

that actually sounds quite delicious

so can anyone figure out what the problem is?

Hi,

Here is a URL with information that was invaluable to me at the start:
http://www.lightwiki.com/Fundamentals_of_Subpatch_Modeling_Part_Two

A subsurfed mesh should be set to Smooth. But this will give another issue
that can only really be fixed by modelling for subsurf.
(Yes you can use Crease/Mark Sharp/Edge Split etc… but other problems
will begin to arise)

This happens to everyone sooner or later when subsurfing, keep up the
good work.

Hope this helps?

Kindest Regards,

Pixeltwister

so, I’m guessing I have to remake the model and try again? :frowning:

Hi,

Not necessarily you may be able to modify your mesh to be more
subsurf friendly. If I get the chance I will make some modifications
to a small part of your mesh and you could replicate the topology.

Rgds,

P.

Hi,

Sometimes better to start again. I could have modified your mesh
but found it easier to demonstrate the kind of topology needed.

The attached .blend contains the main case with sharp and rounded
corners aswell as an inset example for your trackpad. By no means
perfect but a strater at least…

The rest is up to you.

Hope this helps?

Macbook Pro.blend (181 KB)

wow, that is awesome  and may I ask how you modeled the rounded corners of it? :o

Hi,

Just strart with a circle with 16 verts take away 3/4’s. Then extrude/scale/merge
then ALT-J (Merge triangles to quads). Then K loop cut. Lot’s.

The key IMHO in Blender is how to place the 3D cursor and change your Pivot
to work around the 3D cursor (See attached image).

An amazing set of tutorials are available here (Warning heavy going):

If you merge these tut’s with the Fundamentals of subpatch modelling:
http://www.lightwiki.com/Fundamentals_of_Subpatch_Modeling_Part_Two
You get what I have knocked up.

Took me ages to learn though. Still hobbies are fun.

If you have any more questions just ask…

P.
