Modeling Question

hi guys.
im trying to make the Minecraft Items in Blender. They are just 16x16 images.
Until now i took a 16x16 grid and deleted all vertices. I was wondering how you would do that, because its very unefficient…

Thank you, i did not know where to post. I have another question, not modeling related.
In my rendered picture are many small lines between the cubes, you can see it on the picture.
how do i get rid of them?

Couldn’t you just use a tiling texture on a plane instead of stacking cubes?
