Monk Statue

Hey there,
This an old project of mine that and worked a bit more on, now, in order to sell it on turbosquid.

If you are interested in buying it, check the link for more previews/ wireframes/ product details.

It was modeled and sculpted in blender, zremeshed and textured and zbrush and rendered in 3ds max. (I`m still very new to 3ds max, so the renders are not really that good…)
Hope you like it!

Wow, great work. It’s great sculpting and it reminds of something that would be in Doctor Who.
I love it and I like how you left it faceless, it gives it a spooky feeling.
Great work
Keep it up

Coming from 3dsmax and Maya, i wonder why anyone would still like to learn that apps ( if not for professionell reasons ) ^^ … since you got everything inside Blender you need. Anyway i really like this Monk model, specially from the side and back view. Looking at the front view i have the feeling that the shoulders would need more defining ( seemingly somewhat small and bent backwards, with the hands infront of your body like this i would expect the shoulders to follow a little more forwards, making a more round back ).
But as i said Alin a really nice piece  ( btw … i really enjoy your works, keep it up  )

Heh, thanks! Indeed, it looks creepier without a face. :stuck_out_tongue:

You are right, blender comparable to 3ds max or other 3d softwares, and I get so annoyed when I see things that you could do in 2 min in blender and you need 30 min in 3ds max.
But still, the thing is that Im learning 3ds max cause thats what people and using and even though is more complicated to work with, the software is way more developed than blender and has a lot of plugins and tools to work with.
Anyway, thanks and I`m happy to hear you like my work.

Imo it should have face, be it skeleton if not real one, now it just feels hollow and you just feel like something is missing as there’s no face. As artist I get the feeling that face wasn’t done just cuz the one making was too lazy or had no proper skill to make it good enough.

One way to get rid of that feeling would be adding something that clearly shows that it was intentionally left without face, for example it could be cool to add some tree or something like that growing out from the inside and strangling the whole statue.

Also what comes to material / shape of the mesh I feel its way too smooth for a sculpture, it should be more rigged and have a feeling of stone or marble instead of some smooth wax like thingie.

I may seem critical, but atleast to me these things would be somewhat easy things to fix and your outcome would be greatly improved.

Easy jjjuho, seems like you have lots of opinion without a lot of knowledge:) AlinB could easily do a face or skull I have no doubt. I consider us all artists here…meaning if an artists is obviously skilled sometimes the choices he or she makes on a piece is intentional. Sometimes it is due to time constraints and sometimes its just something that has been sitting on their hard drive collecting cyber dust:) IMO I like the faceless monk…although to me it seems like more of an angle of death or grim reaper:)

PS many marble statues are very smooth…impressively smooth I might even say. I’d think its true to say that real stone sculpting must have been insanely difficult. But the results are undeniable and long lasting:)

I am not here to mock or offend anyone on purpose, just saying honestly what I feel by seeing the work. Also like I said if the face was intentionally left out, I feel like there should have been done something more to make it feel RIGHT.

What comes to marble as material you can go and look for reference. I did my googling and didnt found any references of marble looking that waxlike. Best image to describe marble surface I found was this http://image0-rubylane.s3.amazonaws.com/shops/lynnstrauss/AS03.5L.jpg?84 if you have some eye for visuals you instantly see whats wrong here, spec map is way too smooth and reflective.

Real quick here is something I found:)

It really all depends on what you like I guess. There is polished marble and dull rough marble, marble floors that are like mirrors:) We are all entitled to our opinions but keep in mind that constructive criticism is always appreciated. It is a fine line I guess but sometimes I get a bit frustrated with comments that are strictly based on the viewers preference like…I would have preferred it in this color or that color or IMO a square hole would have looked better than a round one:)

I think sometimes we may fall into a state of mind when viewing art that goes something like…

“Its nice but if I was going to buy this piece I would like different colors and not so many paint splatters” instead of experiencing the art before us and appreciating the thought and time that someone put into it.

Sorry AlinB didn’t mean to take over your threat. This will be my last post on this topic:) P.S. I think the fabric folds you sculpted are really good man, that’s always a tuff battle to make it look realistic:)

My goal is to sell the model which means I need to have good previews but still, Im not selling the renders. And in my case, where Im selling a sculpture, the main purpose of the previews are just to show off the model.
You got your point though, the statue would have looked better with some tinny bumps on the surface. And of course, the better the previews the more appealing is the product.
I`m not going to chance anything at this point anyway… soo yea.

The reason why the statue has not face is because this model was not created originally for selling but to use it in a scene where the front was not visible to there was no point in working on the face. So… thats why. Its not that I can`t model a face lol. :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyways guys, thanks for the feedback. I`ll try not to miss that out next time.

Edit: I know see new Dereks post. Yea.. well. My actual reference photo of marble looked really smooth. But I also had a marble with bumps and speckles. I just picked the easiest one to do of course, because Im very new to 3ds max and I don`t know much to do with it. lol

Derek, don`t worry, I like when people share their opinion politely.

Im glad you like the folds. But like I said its a old model so I bet I can do better now.

Cheers!
