I realize that it probably would have been better for me to post this WIP early on during the creation process to get the most feedback. However, the project is still in the WIP phase and I hope that I can get some constructive feedback for improving the render before I am completely finished.
Looks pretty nice. =) I think the main weakness is the lighting, the key light seems just a little too strong and it looks like there are reflections on the dark side of the moons…which doesn’t seem right. Still though, really nice modeling and texturing!
The scene is lit by a single sun lamp because in space the only source of light is the stars. The reason that the dark sides of the asteroids are slightly illuminated is that light is reflecting off of the other asteroids. I will adjust the strength of the lighting along with other changes, and post the result soon.
It has been a while since I posted here but I have not forgotten about the project. I have added in a new alien character and messed around with the setup a bit.
I have not decided how I am going to do the flames from the rocket yet (if anyone has any good ideas of examples on how to do this let me know). I know that the image is a bit noisy (only 250 samples) and I will increase the amount of samples for the final render. Since I am nearly done with the modeling, I am thinking of moving this project to the focused critique forum soon.
Is there anything else that I should add to the scene? I tried to add more color to the scene over the original. This was also an attempt of mine to make a scene with characters that tells a story, which is something I haven’t really done before.
I definitely like this last one the most. I appreciate what you were doing with the other layouts, but the characters positions and directional movements force you to have to look at the image in an awkward position. This last one is much more pleasing to my posture and eyes. I like the contrast going on with the planet on the right, as well as the composition moving to the left so it forces your eyes to stay on the image (provided you are from a country/culture the reads left to right).
If you were willing to, I think your image could benefit and gain interest by using some form of particles around the planet. Maybe some debris orbiting around it, or some type of particle energy/mist? Just to give it some more life.
*Oh, one more thing, you might want to vary your star sizes so they have a greater illusion of distance between them and scale. You don’t have to go this nuts with it, but I always like star compositions like this: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/62/Starsinthesky.jpg/300px-Starsinthesky.jpg … but like I said, you don’t want to over do it and distract from the foreground.
*Oh pt. 2: I just noticed that you changed the aliens head position in the newest one… I think I liked him looking back, made him look like more of an ass, haha.
Good job.
Oh, and I think you have told the story quiet well. It’s pretty funny.
Thanks, B-Rae. I am going to add an asteroid belt around the planet and I will see what I can do about the stars.
In the mean time, I am having some antialiasing troubles. The scene is set to render with transparency and antialising enabled. However, when I render the scene their is a wierd antialiasing effect around the borders of objects.
This is Only when the alpha channel is disabled. When the alpha channel is enabled it looks fine:
The only way that I have found that fixes this problem is if I add a lens distortion node to the scene. Does anyone know what is causing this or how to fix it?
I have added an asteroid belt around the planet, changed the lighting a bit, changed the alien’s pose, and messed with the stars a bit. Let me know what you guy’s think.
