I am trying to figure out how the update motion trail is working but I cannot move the handles

I’m assuming you are using the graph editor because you can’t just select a motion path point and move it. Select all your keys in the graph editor and change your interpolation to bezier and you can then toggle your handles with control H if they are not visable for you. Adjust your handles in f curves and when you have moved your cube using this method to where you want it, go into your motion paths panel in object properties with cube selected and click update paths and you should see your new motion path to view.
