i am trying to switch over to 2.5 from 2.49 and I am trying to figure out how or if you can still click anywhere on the screen to move an object instead of using the arrows, for example in camera view you can click and drag anywhere on the screen to move the camera view.
You don’t need the widgets to move things. Gkey still grabs stuff like in 2.49.

its a small issue but makes a huge difference when modelling in terms of speed
you can also right click and hold to move an object if you prefer to use just a mouse 
What you’re looking for is gestures. They have not yet been migrated to 2.5. Many of us are hoping that they do eventually come back.
