moving tractor tread with rigid bodies

I created a tractor tread, which will not be used on a tank or tractor, but will be used to move rigid bodies.
I applied the rigid body modifier to the objects and animated the tank track. A sphere was used for testing and it only reacts to the single object that was used to create the tread.

Is it possible to do this? Am I doing it incorrectly?
