I wish to make a short video with several animations, all going at their own pace and direction.
can it be done by making each animation in its own file, then start a new file and place the animations in it, where I need them?
It would need to be very simple for me to do it!

it’s a bit difficult to understand what you want to do. Is your final product a video? with different animation/camera and so forth, then you can have different files, export the different shot in the video or image sequence of your choice and then in a new file in blender you can use the video editor to put them back together…
If it’s just to have different animation, you can use the actions and create different animation in one file.
yes the final product is a video. I guess with one camera.
what do I export them as.
the final result will be a HD video.
