my demo reel

I finally put together a demo reel for myself. Production time for the reel and associated special effects was about 2 days.

low res (~19MB) alternate
high res (~40MB) alternate

This is the standalone version. There is another version without the contact info at the end that is the “introduction” to a CD portfolio that has the full versions of all of the works shown in this video.

Software Used:
Blender, Lightwave, MojoWorld, AfterEffects, Photoshop, Premiere, VirtualDub, VideoMach

Let me know what you think of the whole thing!

Well these critiques may or may not apply, depending on what you are gonna use it for. If you are gonna use it as something to show potential clients for freelance stuff, its fine and you can leave it as is. If you are trying to get a job with a studio, however, I would change some things.

First, spend less time with the green effect between scenes. Studios just want to see what you can do quickly, not wait though 30 seconds of effects throughout the thing. Second, spend less time on the “Artificial environments” flybys. Most studios aren’t gonna care about mojoworld that much. It’s nice to include i guess, but i think you over did it.

Take these crits with a grain of salt, because I’ve never even made a demo reel. These are just things I picked up by reading cgtalk forums and watching demo reels.

EDIT:
BTW, it looked good. I think it’s the first demo reel I’ve seen done using blender. Anyone else here got one?

This is indeed geared towards potential clients, not a studio job. If it were for a studio I would cut the shiny transitions and just have rapid fire video/wireframe sequences. I would also drop/reduce the MojoWorld sequences; you are correct in that the average studio wouldn’t really care about that. BTW I also used Lightwave and Terragen in the “Artificial Environment” section.

However for a potential client who either knows nothing or little about CG, (or even if they know quite a bit) the goal is to throw in all of the fancy effects and “wow” secenes that you can pack into a resonable amount of time
