my desk

I’ve been a bit of an armchair artist lately, so I thought I’d start something that I could realistically complete. Ignore the bad lighting, lack of an environment, and lack of textures. It’s very much a WIP

At this stage, there probably isn’t much anyone can comment on, so I don’t expect many replies at this point.

Well for the stage you are in its looking good. The only comment is wouldn’t the desk extend over the tower compartment

You’d think so, but it doesn’t.

i may be wrong, but this isn’t beveled is it?

There’s no reason to bevel something that doesn’t have any bevelled edges.

Well put!

actually, everything is beveled to a degree. no edge on even the straightest of edges is completely 90 degree. everything has a slight curve. it helps to add realism to it.

well since it’s impossible to make an 100% sharp edge i reality there can be a point in beveling slightly…

I’ll take a closer look at my desk later, but I’d have to split the atom to bevel some of the edges.

The reason for bevelling edges is not to make the model ‘physically correct’, rather to make it look more believeable. In real life, everything has some sort of bevel on the corner, no matter how small it may be. You can see this (for example on your desk edge) if you get in the right angle to a light source, you should be able to see a specular highlight (light reflection) along the edge of the desk. The lighting and shading changes along that edge.

However 3D is not real life. If there is a sharp edge in 3D, it’s infinitely sharp. The surface on one side of the edge will be shaded a particular way and the other side will be shaded in a different way. You don’t see the line along the edge at all, just two different sides, which tends to look very fake. I’m sure if you do a search for bevelling in 3d graphics or something you should be able to dig up some images that do a far better job of explaning than this text

Working at your desk must be a painfull experience, or you have to be very careful with such atom-level sharp edges …
