my first render..suggestions? (toon shaded dragon WIP)

Hello to everybody

A few moths ago i started to use blender, and it is a great tool. After reading some tutorials i started a little project for testing, and now i don’t know how to continue . It is a little dragon (or something alike) and i rendered it using toon shading. What do you think about it? Some suggestions about background or animations?

PD: sorry about my poor english, i’ll try to improve it.

Nice, you have talent . Is it already rigged ? Mind to show us the wireframe ?

An idea for an animation: If you are using blender 2.53, you could make a little fire simulation for you dragon. It would be pretty cool.

Best fire tutorial, IMO.

Keep blending :).

Yes, it’s rigged. I did a little walking animation, just a few steps. Thank you for that tutorial, i’m using blender 2.49b but i’ll switch to the new version as soon as possible. Do you know if a fire simulation might look ok with toon shading? I was thinking in adding a pair of wings to do something flying.

Here is the wireframe

I like the way that you did the toon-shading here. The choice of colors and the sharp contrast came out very nicely, and it really conveys a sense of character for this little guy.

Thanks :), it took me some time to find a good combination of light and colors. I did an update, and added a pair of wings. Now i’ll try to do an animation with fire, to see if it can fit well with toon shading.

I did a small fire simulation with the particle system. I did two types, one with smoke and other without it. What do you think about it?

The one with smoke looks better suited for your character

I did another simulation, this time i tried to let the smoke look more cartoon like. What do you think? I changed the particle shape to a sphere and added some ramdom to the size, but i would like to change its size also in time (the older particles should be smaller). Does anyone knows how to do this without using python?

sniff sniff It’s beautiful. But really, what tutorials do people use to get good so quickly?

PD: sorry about my poor english, i’ll try to improve it.

Please do not apologize for this, as I read your post I could not tell you were not a native english speaker. Don’t draw attention to the fact you don’t know it perfect because your putting yourself down.
Keep up the good work!

So you liked it? :). In my case i used the classic blender’s “Noob to pro” wiki, and too many youtube videos (it is the blest blender’s tutorial resource imo).

Thanks for that. Sometimes some people prefers to critic my english instead of my work, so i prefer to say in my first post “hey, i can’t speak/write english properly”.

I did an update, just some changes to let it look better and an animated gif to show it moving. What do you think now? Does it looks like a cartoon flame?

Next i will try to do an animation with the dragon firing the fire.

Very nice! Definitely looks like cartoon smoke. I guess the flames could use a partial outline too, though…

Nice! keep up the good work. i am waiting for the final animated video

wow, that is unbelieveable good, how did you make that fire and smoke it’s really cool ^^

i love the dragon, he’s so cute … can’t wait to see more --> subrscribed :o

PS: don’t worry about your english, unless everyone understands what you mean is it perfect (look at me, i’m also not an english crack XD)

Wooow, the cartoon shaded smoke and flame are beautiful

That dragon looks like a charmeleon-pokémon

Really nice dragon and fire. Cool! …ehrm… Hot!

I tried to add some lines to the fire, but it didn’t looked good. I’ll try with another way, or just model a complete fire with poligons might look ok.

It looks like a charizard  . I didn’t wanted it, i started modeling a TRex, something like “Gon” or a cartoon lizard, but after adding the horns and wings I realized that it was too much similar to a charizard. My subconscient faked me XD.

I have to re-rig the model, it’s giving me some problems and i found a better way to rig the wings, legs and face. I did a little concept art, just to show a possible fire ball

If you’re redoing it, that’s a good time to switch to 2.53
What you have there looks great, and very cute

The only thing I could crit on, and that might be a taste thing, is that the smoke starts too early… The smoke should start on top of the flames and not on the bottom of them…

It’s really well done, you have talent

I’m already using 2.53, but its plenty of bugs :P. The 64 bits linux version is giving me too many head hurts, importing an object from a .blend file or the liquid simulator crashes randomly. The 32 bits seems to be more stable, but i’m still having some minor problems when i want to do something with a button that now is in another place.

About the smoke on the fire, it is true that it should start on top on the flames, but i was trying to add some substance to the fire. As it doesn’t have any “line” to be drawn, it was too clear and inconsistent. I’ll try to solve it later.

Thanks :), it took me some time to imagine a good toon fire. But it still isn’t perfect, i’ll keep searching for something better.

And here is a little update, just a small flight and fire shot. It has some errors, the fireball has some glitchs, and the fire should be more spectacular at first (i wanted something like a explosion). Now i’ll try to do something for the background. I was thinking in a mountain or something similar to climb while flying and leave the bonfire on the top of it. I was thinking also in doing something with a lake, but the liquid simulator is giving me some problems :P.
