My second good model- sword

I say “good” because it’s pretty good for me, nothing compared to the other stuff here though, i’ve been working with blender for a bit over a month and have been getting better, still a long way to go though. Heres a katana i did today, need some help on it probably.

Not too bad after a month. A few crits, if you don’t mind; First and foremost, katana are longer, and the blade slimmer. That is the first thing I noticed. Another thing would be that the ‘blade’ doesn’t seem to have any reflection. Obviously it should. This would be a good oppurtunity for you to mess with reflective textures, if you are learning.

Good effort. Have a look here for some great examples: http://lynnart.net/models/weapons/katana.shtml (you can actually download it and import it into blender).

At the moment it looks like everything is made from one single object. It will be easier if you create the blade & handle as separate meshes. Also, try to avoid subsurfing when working on things like weapons, since it removes the hard edges you actually want.

Here’s an update, I made the blade much longer and slimmer and added reflection to it, hopefully it looks better now.

In my opinion you’re going the wrong direction and the katana’s shape is not looking better. Refer to some reference pictures here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katana. I’ve found that when you want to do a blade, use a Bezier curve to create the outline of it. Then, convert this to a mesh (Object --> Convert Object type). Then extrude and link the vertices in this to create the blade. Don’t set it to smooth and don’t use subsurf on it - rather use more vertices instead. The mirror modifier can be very useful here. If any of these terms are unclear, please search in the forum or in the Blender manual for them.

Good luck and don’t give up - don’t be afraid to restart something if it goes a bit wrong along the way - it’s good exercise.

I agreed that the blade on the second one was worse so I redone it completely as a seperate object, I personally like it alot better now, it still probably needs some critiques though.

ok so im pretty new to blender but i know a lot about swords so ill see if i can help u at all

ok first of all the hilt, the grip should be longer ,katana were traitionally meant to be weilded with two hands

also the guard (thing above the grip and below the blade) is a seperate object from the rest of the hilt

The blade appears to be transparent in this most recent picture. Obviously it shouldn’t be. Good effort though, keep practicing.

I’m not sure but I think the transparent looking part could be the reflection of the cross-guard, i’ll look at it a bit more and make an update later.

I dont really know how far I want to take this one model, chances are it’s going to be in a game or animation so the detail may get lost in the action, either way its been good practice. Thanks for the tips everyone.
