Need Border

Hi, I’ve created this solid shape (top), but I need a border around the edge as in the second image. Can someone please suggest a way to create this border? I selected all the edge faces, but I’m not quite able to extrude outward in all directions, or maybe I’m just not doing it right. Thanks!

ur screwed… as the topology is non-existent at the moment

give me a sec, ill set it up for you.

I started off with a simple shape, that i can now start to work on.

adding some extra loops to get the proper shape.

added the loop witch i will be using for the edge later.

giving the mesh more geometry to work with. so i get a more accurate shape. i also fixed the topology.

added all the geometry i needed to get an accurate shape. i also placed the edge loop where i wanted it to be.

this is really simple so i wont give you the blend file. however ill tell you everything i used.

  • Background image
  • CTRL R - Add a loop
  • Smooth vertex - good to use on everything other than the edge. well in this case it was… gave me a smooth shape.
  • J - Join two vertexes on a face.
  • E - Extrude

Wow, this is so cool… exactly what I needed. Thanks so much! I’ll give it a go!

Ok, so I’m stuck adding the edge. I’ve got the edge selected, but can you please tell me exactly what to do from here in order to add the edge border evenly all the way around?

take a look at my 4th image. i said i also fixed the topology.

one way you can fix this is to select the edges, press E, then scale it up. use CTRL R and the mouse weel to add loopcuts, then select everything in the middle and smooth it 100 times.

EDIT: ignore this post

Yes, that’s what I did, but the added edge/border was not even in terms of width. Now I understand you tweaked yours a lot more than I did mine. I’ll keep playing with it. Thanks again!
