Hey guys, I am doing a small project to create this interior scene, this is a living room with no window(it’s weird, I knew.) but I just want to make it as realistic as possible. But since there are no windows or any open areas in this area, I cannot use HDRI lighting, which makes the lighting(using lamp, area light, etc) really flat and unrealistic. I really want some advice or tips from you guys to help me out.
Here is the scene, and a test render(i hide the ceiling just for testing HDRI, but will unhide ceiling in final render)
Hi Bao.
Why does the room have to be windowless?
Is it your personal project?
If what you need is a view of the kitchen alone, you can get around the problem by entering a front view with your Camera, leaving the mesh of the walls behind to open, so as to let in light.
If instead you have to stick to this situation, you should insert a Light Area at ceiling height, perhaps adding a Light Falloff Node, playing with the Value and the Smooth.
As lighting, however, not only those 2 luminous bodies present on Scene are enough…
thanks for your advice, maybe i should not stick to windowless, that would be way easier to do.
Hi, I would try some spots under the wall mounted parts and even a masked LED band where the beam meets the wall to make the lighting more appealing. Maybe a lamp or two somewhere behind the camera for reflections.
Thanks for you suggestions, since this is a replicate for a photo, i cannot add extra lighting in the scene.
But that would be a good option for my future projects
In my opinion you should start with ambient occlusion. Once you have that set at a reasonably realistic level you can add modular lighting to add some atmosphere.
i find Ambient occlusion is too fake for me, i dont know if there are something wrong with my settings
If this is a replica of a photo, you should have a pretty good reference for the lighting, no?
it’s a brand new apt and just finished, so it’s pure empty, but we have all the furniture list already. so there is nothing too much i can change…
Oh, so the room you are replicating doesn’t have any lighting yet? That’s a bit tricky. It seems to me like there isn’t much you can do if you don’t want to add extra lighting, is there? I guess just make sure you are using sufficient light paths, caustics, etc.
I am just kind of cheating right now, remove all the side wall(that are not in the view) to let HDRI lighting coming in as much as possible.
Yeah - you need to tweak the settings until it looks usable. Cycles is very bad with small light sources, trust me that you don’t want to go down that route.
(actually, there was no denoising when I was doing it so what do I know, maybe it’s not going to be a problem anymore)
In my opinion AO is the only way to get a good baseline, which you then expand with actual lights.
Alright, i am goona try tweaking it. thanks for your tips!
