layer texturing, about freaking time! I hope they improve the brush painting performance also.

It’s really cool to see all those projects together on the same page !
It’s great they did that so it’s much easier to see what is currently in the work.

Lots of promising projects !

Yea it’s a pity sculpting is not on this roadmap. Sculpting + Texturing were the 2 most neglected areas of Blender. I am just happy for texturing at least.

Yes…it’s nice…it reminds me the Unreal roadmap page…I haven’t checked now if it still like this…but some years ago it was like this and it was a nice way to recap what’s boiling…

Trying to do texturing in Blender has been a very frustrating experience for me. Even when it works it’s very slow. Glad to see it’s getting worked on.

If they can get texture layering into even a bare-bones state, I’d legit consider using it over Substance

You can already do layer texturing with ucupaint, which is a free addon, the issue is the painting is native Blender implementation, it’s slow with bigger brushes and high resolution textures. Maybe they need a GPU implementation of the painting.

edit: It looks like Sean Kim is working on the brush performance already: https://projects.blender.org/blender/blender/pulls/157934

this will benefit ucupaint

Just me or are there weirdly few Eevee improvements on the roadmap?

This is all I care about, but slightly worried that re-linking isn’t specifically mentioned (because you can import and override today, even though it’s very broken, but what you can’t reasonably easily do is re-link anything).

Have been looking forward to this in Blender:

Animation layers in Blender is very important. Wonder why it was placed on hold.

Yeah, I think that’s the biggest disappointment at the moment and something I think would give Blender for animation a real shot in the arm.

It is on hold because developers that are supposed to work on it have other projects. Sybren with BATv2 and Online assets, Nathan reduced his working days to 1 day per week and currently working on Blender project and Blender variables. Chris is working on other things also. It needs developers.

I’d argue that layered animations (after all this time) is more important then online assets, project/variables and likely whatever Chris is working on.

But maybe that’s just me.

Afaik Sybren is working on Online Assets right now. so they can make it into 5.2. And since cloning people is (unfortunately?!) forbidden in Netherlands, He can work on one thing at a time.

I remember back in 2024 there was a big deal made about the whole Animation 2025 project. After the initial slot development it just fizzled out.

I don’t think they have enough staff to pull it off.

They have lots of staff, but Clement is too busy writing a new shading language from scratch instead of using one of the many that have been around since the 80s, as one example, there’s others

Any reason why he’s reinventing the wheel here?
