I don’t know, try it and find out :D.
If you’re going to start a business you surely made some sorts of business plan and went through some project scenarios to see if your pipeline can handle it?
Or did you just wake up and decided you’ll go full Linux VFX Studio? Then it’s most likely a bad idea.
I can tell you it works for me (well Blender and the Adobe Master Collection). While I still have a day job, I am funding a very good retirement with money made from freelance. As for using all freeware software, if you are a one stop shop, then your customers will not care what you used to get the finished product, only that you produce a finished product.
Quick question. Do you have a business plan or are you just shooting from the hip, creating a webpage and hoping the world will come knocking at your door? If the latter, then I can tell you that won’t happen. Starting a business is a hard thing to do. Plan on 70 and 80 hour weeks, plan in a lot of disappointment when the potential client goes somewhere else because they beat your price by a few bucks.
But if you are dedicated, and willing to put in the work, then by all means it is do-able! Good luck!
Thank you all for your reply. First I am a new guy for business, Second I have 10 years of experience in the industry. My plan is that I’ll only do commercial. I’ll have a Smoke and FCP. Rest 6 computers with Linux, Gimp, Blender. I am a matchmover and compositor. I have sources for matchmoving jobs from abroad. Do you think its a good idea ?
It’s hard to say. I do like the idea and I’m confident that open software could do it; however Blender is more procedural. If you feel confident in being able to compete then I say go for it. I’m sure that using open source software could save thousands periodically on overhead. Wishin’ ye luck.
