Newbie Question - Different textures on different parts of the model

Hey, A bit of a newbie question here - how do you select different parts of a model to receive different textures/materials? For example, I have a nice chair model that I want to add into my scene to render in YafaRay, but I want the chair’s legs to have a chrome-ey material, while the seat and stuff needs to have a more matte finish. How do I apply materials to these different parts of the model? Every material I apply is just applied to the model as a whole.

you could also UV map different part of your chair
so check out the wiki for UV mapping!
