Node Wrangler - Shift/Ctrl/LMB doesn't create viewer node

So, I am following this tutorial, and it says Shift/Ctrl/LMB to create a viewer node using Node Wrangler, to get this:

But when I do it, that doesn’t happen, it connects directly to the Material Output node instead, like so:

The Add On is enabled, I am on blender 3.4 on Windows 10.

The Viewer node was apparently removed in 3.4. It was said to be redundant, I don’t really get it but it’s gone. I use 3.3 LTS generally, I can confirm it still works in that version

There’s an addon called “Node Preview” that does it. It costs a few bucks, but it’s indispensable IMO.

Ah, that explains it. Also things like MixRGB and some math nodes have been “removed”. Apparently I can use an emit node by hand to achieve the same effect.

Ah, also discussed here: Is viewer node gone in shading?

It was an emission node behind the scenes (see screenshot below).
Since the material output already behaves like an emission node when non-shaders are plugged into it, the viewer emission node was unnecessary.
