Non-Physics platform game (2d)

So Hi, I’m trying to make a platform game without physics because I dont like the floatyness and want it to react like an old school game. I’m experimenting with using IPO for the jumping so that its predictable, I have an IPO that is only keyed on the Z axis (up) which works however whenever the ipo plays the left and right controls cease to work until the animation is finished. Anybody got any ideas on how i can make this work? Thanks
