Noob question about duplicating mesh

Hi all.

Still trying to learn Blender. I’m trying to make some clothes for a Makehuman model. I’ve selected the faces and duplicated them. However, when I select the new, potential “shirt,” in object mode, the original model is selected also. I can’t prevent this. What am I missing?

TIA,

When you duplicate faces, they’re still part of the original object (not all faces in an object need to be connected). To separate them, tab into Edit Mode, select the faces you want to disconnect and hit P. Then click on Selected in the menu that pops up.

Voila! Now you can Tab back into Object Mode and select the newly separated shirt object.

Thank you for the help. BTW, where did this quote come from? It sounds familiar.

“Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of threads.”

The phrase has quite a history. I swiped it (with a little editing) from Robert Oppenheimer who said it at the first successful test of the atomic bomb, and he happened to be quoting the Bhagavad Gita.
