Normal Map Issues. Seeking advice!

Hello! I’m new to blender and I’m having issues baking a normal map. The model looks fine when using procedural bump node but looks pretty weird when baked.

Advice on how to get a better result would be much appreciated. I’ll try providing everything i think might be helpful.

Result after using the baked normal map:

I’m unfortunately only able to add 1 image it seems so i will describe the rest

  • I am baking to a 4k image.
  • the bump nodes are not very extreme.
  • Reducing the strength of the normal map does help a bit (the skin looks closer!) but the shell does not :frowning:
  • All bump nodes have a strength of 1 and a distance of around 0.02.
  • the UV unwrap has minimal to 0 stretching(the diffuse map bake for example has no issues)

How are you plugging the normal map in to the texture?

You should use the normal map image (set to non colour) - a normal map node - plug into the the normal input.

Thanks for the response!

I did some more tests and its seems unchecking the “open shading language” box under device in the render settings fixed all my issues.

if you know why that might be the case i would love to know!

I do not really know why, sometimes I have had problems with OSL as well (I usually have it turned off)
