Normal Map Material

I have been searching on the web for an in depth documentation about how to make a normal map material
with blender.

Can this be achieved with material nodes ?

What render engine would you be using material-nodes-wise?

I would use The Blender Render Engine with Material-Nodes.

It would seem to me that you could just get the normal map output of the Blender Internal render or the Cycles render, and screen the normals in your map that you don’t want using the object index output and an ID mask.
