NormalMaps

Hi guy’s,
I was recently working in Blender and trying to bake some normal maps. I made a VERY simple model of wooden beam and textured it with some image of wood. Than I’ve played with nodes and those are results

, out of it I baked normal map, but it is very noisy (I mean I’m not sure if normal map for game asset should be that noisy, most of normal maps I’ve found on internet were not noisy)
Is it possible to bake it with lesser amount of noise ? Are there any other ways to bake normal form diffuse texture (except with some special programs or plugins) ? Should I bake normal maps this way in case of creating some simple game assets ?
Thank you in advance !

the nodes include a color image
this is not a Normal map

how did you do that normal map
is it in blender or outside soft ?

happy bl

I baked this texture in Blender. I’ve created new image in UV/image editor than I’ve added new Image Texture node and set my new image in it (as a image to bake texture to). All the other nodes are the same as in the picture I’ve posted. Than I go to bake section and change baking mode to normal map and it is done. If you do the same thing with nodes as I did and just disconnect Color output of Image texture with input of diffuse BSDF, than your textured model will be still textured but it will be tottaly black and white, it will look like some sort of bumpiness. I hope my explanation make sense.
Thank you for your answer.

Baking a normal map from a diffuse map in blender is kind of a weird way to go about it. I recommend you use gimp’s normalmap plugin or a program called “materialize” to create a proper normal map with high frequency and low frequency detail.

So far as I’m working in Blender I was trying to learn as much as possible to be able to create game assets, and other necessary things in blender itself (for example normal maps), but program “materialize” seems really helpfull. I’ll certainly try it.
Thanks !
