Objects as particles

I’m looking into particles, following a tutorial at http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Manual/Particles which may be somewhat out of date since 2.46 that I’m using. Certainly the panels are laid out differently from the examples.

So far, I have been able to get particles to “beam up” from an emitter mesh. However, when I try to make parented objects (a cube) instead of the default sparks (use dupliverts button) all I see is the cubes sticking to the corners of my mesh emitter. They don’t move up like the sparks were doing. What am I missing?

With particles in 2.46 you have to set visualization to object and specify the object to use in the OB: field.
