Over my break from uni I started this small project where I am modelling an old barn. So far the modelling has been clean but I am starting to add in lots of clutter and damage/age things. What I am after is a bit of critique and/or suggestions on things I can do in my last week to make this thing look better.
Like what sort of clutter would you expect, how do I got about aging/damaging things any major features that don’t work or should be in there, etc…
Keep in mind I only wish to use simple colours for final materials giving a slightly cartoonish look.
You can see my latest blog post on this project here - http://jasonstrooband.com/blog/barn-wip-2/
-the building it self is not cartoon-ish, cartoon-ish looks needs to be exaggerated.
-most damage/age things you can get is from textures in reality, in cartoons, things are displaced, broken, chaotic.
-the best thing to learn from is by observing the already done, do search for cartoon barns.
Sorry I didn’t explain it right, I am after flat colour style and not the exaggeration of 2d. This isn’t a texture exploration it is just a modelling project with some colours thrown on.
I have added some clutter pieces around the place and even added a ground and a stand for it all to go on
Thanks for the suggestions Modron, I added the bailing wire and the hay bails.
I have also added in some flat colours which I think look awesome but I will work on the ground a little more by adding in some variation in colour and some dirt patches.
I hope when you get more time, you might consider taking a different approach on this, because I think it would be a real cool photorealistic project with strong emphasis on the textures and the aging you mentioned. I’m really impressed with your modeling on the barn. I love the broken old cart you made. The only thing that sticks out to me is that I think those pallets seem to be scaled too large possibly.
Unfortunately I start back at my Uni course in a few days time where I have to jump right back into a full time workload on new projects, but I will keep it in mind when I am thinking of a future personal project to work on.
Now that you point it out those pallets do look to big, but simple fix, thanks.
P.S. I didn’t do textures on this in part because I do a lot of photorealistic stuff and my texturing skills are under par and need some work.
