This is an old city gate from Haarlem, the city I live in. The gate got demolished in 1830 so I wanted to make a visualisation of it for people to enjoy.
I’ve learned so much from this project that I can’t even think of what to say about it : )
If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask and I’ll try my best to answer them.
Hi, thank! I had some old drawings to work with from our city archive.
There aren’t any pictures available as photography wasn’t invented yet, that’s mostly what triggered me to try create a ‘photo’ of this building.
Yeah, my goal was to make it photorealistic. I’m going to try adding some bloom and glare to the image, thanks for the tip!
edit: Ok, I tried adding some post processing in Photoshop, I always find it difficult to find the right balance between bloom/glare and keeping the image crisp. What do you think of it now?
Nice scene, really like it. FIrst i thought it was from that other Dutch guy doing old scene from the Netherlands.
You seem to be using the older reference shots arent you? The small building to our left side has the stair step front facade. Im not sure of course which drawings are the newer or older ones. It looked like the ones with the different roof and facade where later in time.
Still wonderfull scene, must have been tons of work.
Are you going to do all the list gates? Could be a nice job or work for the city. I think they would love this render, there must be some museum who would like to pay for it.
Those tall green window shade things seem to have a little more ornate stuff going on in the drawings (but hard to see), while yours look almost industrial, that is the only thing that throws me off, otherwise I love the render and lighting (I prefer the first one without the bloom). The whole setting is excellent and convincing to me.
Basically a nice work. Don’t be cross with me, but it looks still a bit like a plastic model for train toy models. The main reason are the lighting and the missing life (People etc.) in my opinion.
Did you use a HDR image for the lighting? If not, https://hdrihaven.com/ has great images for free download.
