Have had the idea to model Optimus for quite a while, so tonight I started diddle farting around in Blender and this progressed.
It’s HEAVY wip, and only textured and subsurfed to test the textures and over all shape. The glows around his eyes and orange lights is test as well.
The greyed areas are what will be cromed later with an evn map, to make it look all metal and shiney.
If anyone has any comments or ideas to spiff this up a bit, dont hesitate to throw your 3 cents in.
Hey bgdm,
Thanks for the reply, yeah i used to watch all the time when i was a kid as well.
As for the metalic and shiney bits, you bet he is. You should see some of the professional models you get get of the Transformers. I definatly want him to look a little more realistic than the non-shaded red and blue from the cartoon and comix.
When i finish him up and im satisfied with all the parts, and dont feel i should re-model any for higher detail, i may also add an armature system.
Anywayz…
If i get a good Optimus and a fully functional armature system, you can count on me modeling Megatron, and there WILL be a duel.
Well BgDm, since your the only one that likes my Prime, this update is just for you… (still heaps to do tho, plus all my subsurfs and smooths arn’t turned on)
Hey… I like it too! lol… I loved the transformers as a kid. I had at least 2 dozen, including, of course, Optimus Prime. Any chance of modeling the trailer too? From what I recall, it opened up into some kind of mobile base or something… can’t remember, it’s been a while.
Unless they’ve been taken, I’ve still got most of them in a box back home somewhere. My favorite to play with was the Decepticon team, can’t remember what they were called, but they were 4 sports cars and a tractor-trailor that combined into a larger bot (tractor-trailor made the body and head, sports cars made the arms and legs). Actually… it may have been 5 cars, with one acting like chest armor, but I can’t quite remember.
Looks just like the tv character as I remember. I’m a bit too old I think, but my little brother used to watch the show all the time. Are you going to make him morph into a truck?
I would LOVE to model him so he could transform, though i think i would have to remodel him with that animation in mind, to make sure that all the parts would fit together exactly and what rotations it would take for the part from position A to position B. It would definatly be alot more work, but rewarding to see him animate with the swishy clicky sound of the transformation.
Not sure how much more i will do on him, i just put some simple hands on him, but they arnt looking quite right (always had trouble drawing hands too). I may still armature him up, but after working on him for 2 days straight i really feel like moving onto something else, who knows tho. I did already create a basic sceen for him to strike a pose, we’ll see what happens.
Anywayz, thanks for the comments and interest.
Question… are you working on an Optimus Prime toy you have, or some reference pics?
If you don’t have the toy, I should still have it at home. We’re moving back, and ought to be in the house in a little over a month… If you plan to pick this project back up, I may be able to find it, and if I’ve still got most of the peices, I can take some reference pics for you at many angles, and pics through a “transformation”.
Doh! I remember a bit more… I think one of the pecies (which I think is lost) was a gasoline hose/nozzle. I swear there was a turret back there too, but I’m pretty sure I remember a gas pump.
Hi,
Acctually no, i dont have the toy, but i remember REALLY REALLY wanting one about 14 years ago. hehe
I would definatly appreciate some good reference pics of optimus or any of the bots, tho i dont want you to go to too much trouble, the pics i have found for reference have all been frontal only.
Maybe you could try your hand at modeling a transformer as well, its great fun…honest
Anywayz, glad you guyz liked it.
Okie. When I get home and settled in, I’ll look around. If I find them, I’ll take the reference pics and post 'em. I already thought it’d be a cool project :). Maybe I’ll get around to it.
