Paper on possible volumetric speed enhancement

I was perusing the Siggraph 2014 papers, and I stumbled upon this paper: . I’ll admit, 95% of it was way over my head, but I was wondering if any of you know if this is the sort of thing that could be adapted/relevant to Cycles? The decrease in rendertimes was impressive (their demo scene went from 4.5 hours to 25 minutes). I’m sure the devs probably have other things to worry about, but I just thought I’d ask.
