Particle hair not rendering properly

This hair looks fine in the viewport, but looks like the image attached when rendered. The flat top and bump in the middle are not expected. The second image is of the viewport and is what the render is expected to look like. Still new at this, so I’m probably missing something.

The hair was combed and no modifiers other than the particle system. What could be causing this?

Solved! In the viewport, the strand steps were set to 2, where in the render they were set to 6. Changing to 2 for render solved the problem.
