Photorealistic Rabbit (not a hare)

Hi Blender Community!

So anyway I didn’t think I was going to enter the BG competition, but I felt like making a rabbit anyway, and I thought that that was something I could get pretty realistic-looking in 15 days. Also, I haven’t entered a BG contest since the first one. So, here’e my new project! I’m trying to create something like this:

And after a day of work, I have this:

Honestly this is probably the best animal fur I’ve ever made, my other attempts (at true fur at least) have been rather painful to look upon, but I’m fairly pleased by this considering how early I am in this project. Note that the eyes are 100% makeshift, and I only threw them in their to stop my brother freaking out at eyeless sockets.

That looks quite nice, however I would suggest making the front legs longer and thinner, although that could also be caused by the camera perspective.

Pretty awesome.

The inside of the ears need a better texture + SSS, although you could fake the SSS probably.

The modeling on the mouth is… not right. A bit too big I think? But from my experience modeling mouths, thats gonna be really hard to get just right.

But that fur is really awesome. Wanna point out some tutorials you referenced, or share some tips?

Thanks jrkirby for the quick comment! Yeah I didn’t think the mouth looked right…as for the SSS I made a material with SSS but I forgot to assign it to the ears! :o So I fixed that. Also I painted in some blood vessels for the ears, as well as a speckle texture for the main body. I also started working on some legit eyes but they aren’t working so well so far…I’ll keep working at it.

good model and texture start so far for 1 days work its really impressive. Gonna keep my eye on this for further progress . How many particles are in this render?

You might want to make the front legs a little bit longer. Other than that, very impressive. If only I could do that…

Thanks! There are 3000 strands, 100 children to the strand.

Cool! I think Creating animals is quite difficult. I have one question, what kind of light are you using?

Looks good so far, but I would really focus on getting the geometry realistic before even thinking about fur. It saves a ton of time in the long run, and it will look much better trust me.

Right now I would work on the head, neck, and front legs.

Good luck,
Jonathan

I agree with Jonathan. The fronts legs are a little too short and fat, and I think the mouth looks a little too big.

@Simon: Thanks! Yes, it has been difficult for me, I think that my owl project has proved the most manageable.

@Jonathan/Gordax: That’s funny, because I followed an image almost exactly (it wasn’t the one I posted above.) But, anyway, I’ve made some changes, so hopefully this looks better.

Also, I added a hill (still a WIP) with some grass, as well as some whiskers. I changed the eyes, they’re working better now, and I also added the sky. As for the ears, there’s some weird glitch in the texture/fur around the base - I’ll try and fix that soon.

The brows on the rabbit are to pronounced, try shrinking them.

This is a great little project you have going…taking on some very difficult aspects like fur, animal modeling and nature:) I would say if at all posible you should consider modifing your rabit to fit the pose of the real rabit you have above. Not that your rabit isnt possible its just that the pose doesnt grab my eye as much as the real one above. The fur is looking great but a bit too shinny imo. I do think the neck and front legs are a bit thick and reducing them 20-25% would impove the overall rabbit model greatly. Remember that with animals if you use a reference you have to take into account the animals hair. Think about a wet cat…they look like skin and bones without all their fur…more than you would think:) Keep it up I look forward to seeing where this goes:)

Happy Blending!

@Derek: thanks! I am working on a rig right now, so just sit tight and I’ll pose him. My bro said he looks a bit like a decoy now, so yeah, I agree with you, it needs a rig. I will try to thin the neck and legs too.

Hey, I know you are just starting, but I thought I’d add some suggestions so you could keep them in mind as you work.
I really think your scene should look like that first photo. Don’t forget to work on the grass and the ground, because the environment it’s in will really help the realism. Also, the DOF in the photo is perfect, so I would add that in later because it really helps with the scale of the picture.

I think this could turn out really well, keep it up.

I just have to point out that the image is of a hare, not a rabbit. ;D

(and yes, it’s actually a big difference, hehe)

@Farmfield, this was in fact the official animal planet photo under “rabbit” and not “hare”. If it was a hare, its ears would be enormous. =)

LOL, yes, googeling ‘rabbit’ that’s one of the top results. But I dunno man, it looks like the hare’s we have here in Sweden - lots of them here… Weird, hehe… ;D

BUNNY!

Thanks everyone for the comments. I’ve added some improvements such as upclose grass, a subtle pose, and DoF - let me know what you guys think!

So, it’s still not photorealistic, but I think it’s getting there!

starting to look real good and its getting close to photo goodness! … small thing i might try is minor composition tweaks the viewing angle seems to be at a perfect right angle and subject is very centered , nothing illegal about it but i would try making slight angle and position changes to counter this “exactness” in frame … and then i might change it back to how it was in the first place haha who knows … BUNNY!
