You know when you to do something funny so you and some friends can have a good laugh and you don’t know exactly how to do it, but you have an idea, so you set out to do some trial and error, while Googling like crazy and hoping you will find the answer because that has worked oh so many times?
Well, that’s what I’ve been doing all afternoon, and at some point it has to stop, because I’m not even supposed to be learning Blender from scratch, I’m supposed to be learning something else and this is turning into an obsession, so if someone can point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.
I downloaded a model of the 2009 Star Trek Enterprise from a great modeler called Alexander Klemm (https://www.alex3d.at) and been using it to learn some Blender for the past few days. Love it so far, and one thing I want to learn how to do is to add some text to the top of the saucer.
After hours of trial and error, first handwriting with the mouse, then exporting the texture and typing text in Affinity Photo, then bringing it back, I kind of achieved what I wanted, with one caveat. The saucer unwraps to a square UV map that repeats 3 times around the circle. So if I overlay the text in the part of the saucer I want it, which is the forefront between the border and the NCC-1701 letters, then I see parts of the text repeated and cut off:
So I thought, maybe I would need to create a separate UV map with just the polygons where I want the text to be. But all my attempts at doing that and showing in the final render have been disastrous.
If you’re still reading this, congratulations on your extreme patience, and is this something doable or it requires several months of learning Blender?
