Impressive. How did you make the texture changes?
If you refer to the faces, we don’t use texture animation, we just use a png image with alpha, and animate the restrict viewport visibility option. Paste the image to the face mesh with the ShrinkWrap modifier. So we can draw the faces in Krita or gimp and animate it without bones or rigging.
