Posing Practice

Hello everyone!

I’ve been learning rigging for several months now and was looking for more practice. I remembered I’ve had this character sitting in my 3d projects folder for almost a year now. I made this model as an in-joke between a group of friends and never had any intention of finishing it. Fast-forward to today, and I finished it (mostly). I tried lots of different poses to test the limitations of the rig as well as practice posing characters.

I started with some simpler poses to see how the character looks when rendered (Bonus points to anyone who gets the reference in the second image)

The arm and shoulder area had a lot of corrective bones since his upper body is so large, I had a hard time getting deformations that didn’t have egregious stretching or candy wrapper artifacts around the shoulders. The final result looks good in some instances and not so good in others (Dealing with transformation constraints is about as fun as getting a lobotomy). I’m still trying to work out the best way to handle this area, as there’s a lot of different mechanism’s interacting with each other.

Despite his size he is actually quite nimble

I wanted to test some more extreme poses to see how the character would deform. Overall I am quite happy with the results, they came out a lot better than I expected. Maybe I’ll make a yoga poster out of them :man_shrugging:

There’s still a lot of things I’d like to fix/add to the rig the main thing being a face rig (right now he’s permanently stuck with that smug look on his face). The arm bands are also not really rigged, I just used a data transfer which is why they look kind of wonky. I do hope to revisit this character some day and make it more complete, but honestly I am so sick of rigging right now, I need a break from it. Thank you for taking the time to read through my rambling. I’d love to hear people’s thoughts on anything from the character design to the renders themselves. That’s all for now!

Great idea. Kudos on your execution, as well.
My only complaint would be the chest. Looks like a guy that’s been taking estrogen, unintentionally.
The shape is great; the lower portion has the overhang of a boob. The line of the nipple, horizontally, is where the cutoff begins to blend into the torso. See photos in search below.
Lastly your center line has no fade off.

That’s great! That has to be the George Costanza pose.
