Problem with the mesh surface

Happy new year to everyone,

I am new to blender and right now I am trying to model my first character. At the moment its a female base mesh but I have some issues with its surface. I get weird shadings and I know I had this probleme before but can’t remember how I solved it. I think there was a simple shortcut or something and I just forgot it. :confused:
So I would be glad if somebody can help me out…

Select all vertices
Remove doubles (W / remove doubles)
Recalculate normals (Ctrl+N)
