Proposition: Need some UFO CG for a no-budget short film

I am looking for someone who would be interested in doing some modeling and light animation for a short film I’m working on.

I am a Utah-based independent filmmaker. I am a member of a group of filmmakers, all in Utah, which each agree to create a short film every 30 days, for 6 months. We are on month 3. Each month, we pick a theme, and each of the 7 members start working on a new film. At the end of the 30 days, we meet and watch each others films. This is very similar in concept to LA’s “Group 101 Films” (www.group101films.com).

An example of some of my previous work can be found, “On The Lot” at http://films.thelot.com/films/16609

I can also show some of my clips from previous films from the group if you are interested, but none are currently online.

In this particular film (the theme is “Road Trip”), two UFO enthusiasts meet online and arrange to visit a frequent UFO sighting location. Over the coarse of the road trip out to the site, they discover some major problems. He’s a trekkie, and a nerd. She’s beautiful, smart, and a Star Wars Fanatic. As you can imagine, they don’t get along… At first. Long story short (17 page script), she can’t resist him, and they end up rolling in the dirt, while UFOs fly overhead.

So, specifically, I’m looking for someone who can take some live-action footage, and animate something of a detailed, believable UFO which hovers overhead for a moment before darting off into the horizon just before the credits roll. Not much from an animation stand point, but I’d to have some nice detail on the UFO. Lots of lights, and spires on one side, black as night on the other side. I imagine the scene as this (and a little from the script for setup):

James keeps monologing without noticing how she’s looking at him.
JAMES
But like on Coruscant every race and people can coexist peacefully, and that’s just like in the Federation.
JORDAN
Thank you for inviting me along.
JAMES
Isn’t there a common ground where a Vulcan and a Jedi can come together…

Jordan pulls James’s head to her and kisses him full on the mouth.
James’s eyes go wide and he smiles in amazement.
JAMES
Wow.
JORDAN
Wow? Is that all you’ve got to say now?
JAMES
Um, Allayloo ta nuv, yub yub.
JORDAN
You speak Ewok? Oh yeah!

Jordan jumps onto James, throwing her arms around his neck and wrapping her legs around his waist, knocking him to the ground. She sits up, peels off her sweatshirt to reveal a T-shirt that says “Dorks are hot” and throws herself back on top of him.

Overhead, a triangular light zips into the sky. It drifts slowly to the left before it is joined by a second light. They hover for a moment, then bob to the left before zipping off to the right in a way that normal, earth aircraft could never move.

So, as Jordan pulls off her sweatshirt, to reveal the t-shirt underneath, the camera tilts up onto the night sky. Stars flutter for a moment under a black hole in the sky. Slowly, the hole begins to turn, revealing the structure, lights, and spires of the ship. It hovers for about 5 seconds before it floats to the side. Some lights blink for a moment, and then it darts off in the opposite direction, and credits roll. The ship isn’t enourmous (not thing like Independance Day, or Close Encounters), but big enough to show some design and detail. Small enough that it doesn’t cover the entire frame.

So whats the catch with all of this? Well, I mentioned that we do these shorts every thirty days. That means two things… Little or no money to go around (who can afford to drop a couple thousand dollars every month on a hobby? Call me if you can!), I could send you a small amount through paypal for beer and pizza (that’s what I pay my cast and crew with), but thats about it. this is more for experience, and practice, demo-reel material, and the fun of it. Second… Deadline. For this project, I would need to have the animation finished, and delivered by the 5th of May-- No later (it still has to be composited, and the film mastered by the 7th for the private screening).

As I said, I do this every month. Each month is different, and I don’t know what I’ll be doing from one to the next, but certainly, there is the opportunity to do more stuff like this if you’re interested.

So, if you’re interested, let me know. Be prepared to show me some of your modeling and animation work. If everything starts to look good (you’re interested, I’m interested, etc), I can make available access to the complete script, etc before you make any final decisions.

Hoping to hear from someone soon.

Thanks,
Kyle Mallory

Oh… and yes, I use Blender (or am trying to use it), on Linux. I’ve done a little animation using 3D Studio Max, and Maya, but my lack of talent starts to show when I actually have to model something, hence this notice…

Have you heard from anyone yet?

Not one. Nice model. We finished shooting this weekend, so hopefully in the next day or two, I can post the final scene for anyone interested.

If you’re interested or want more info, email/pm me.
