[Question] Which way to retopo this model?

Hello everyone, I have a model with messed up topology

How to retopology it? Is there any method to do it automatically?
Or should I better off remodel it?

Thank you.

You must be a man of perfection! This does not look that bad

It depends on your final point, is it for a movie, game, web, showing on family and friends Iphones?

thank you. This is for my client. He needs clean topology.

I’m assuming you used something like marvelous designer and had it exported as quads, which doesn’t look bad at all.

I guess you want (almost) perfectly aligned quads, which I doubt any auto-remeshing tool will do. I’ve only seen zbrush’s remesher do a pretty good job, but even then, it won’t be perfect. If that doesn’t do the trick for you, there won’t be any other way than doing it the long way, but seeing it’s a squareish shape, I don’t think it would be too difficult - I do think you’ll end up with a very dense mesh, though.

Well, it really depends on your polygon budget. Does your client have a lot of $polygons ?

Personally i would use 3d coat autopo and it would take me 5 to 7 min to do it! In blender you can only do it manually to get decent result but if like me you have RSI then autopo is where the power lie with static mesh like that.

I know 3d coat is not free but it’s damn cheap for the amazing tools it’s offer for such a low price, the painting is one of the best of the industry.

May your client be cgtrader?

You can check Bakemyscan addon. It offers various auto-retopology workflows (Especially Quadriflow is quite good).

Thank you guys. I will take a look on them.

Hey 5 to 7 mins, looks a lot of time! but maybe you got multi million polys models… :open_mouth:
I’m asking as a profane user, never used that. But they say it’s the only solution, together with Zbrush’…

I would advise against retopologizing this unless it’s a game model. If you do, you’ll probably lose a lot of definition in the wrinkles. Maybe just fix that horrible thing at the very top manually.

Well i was counting the time require to draw a few topological lines so the flow follow correctly.

Doing a simple autopo without drawing guides would probably be less than a minute then.

Just discovering this new addon thank to you but i am not sure yet what it is since by the video i think he use some new algorithm similar to pro optimizer in 3ds max and Quadriflow i am not sure if it is based on the instant meshes code.

Bakemyscan addon just utilizes those retopology algorithms and put them in an easier workflow (as well as baking textures etc).
Quadriflow is somewhat improved version of instant meshes. Take a look at their paper for more info: QuadriFlow: A Scalable and Robust Method for Quadrangulation

OK thank for the link!
