race car light setup...

Hi I’m making a racecar.
I did my rendering in the internal renderer, but I still have problems getting a good light setup ,
I mean not to many white on the car and still enough details. Anyone an idea or tip?

Please let me know thanks!

What are you using now? Can we see the setup please?

Plastic car?

Obviously he needs help with materials and lights, you can render a car in BI just as well as Cycles if you know what you are doing.

not bad man. definitely could use a little work, so you are in the right place. im not sure how much help I can offer, but i think vicky or someone else might have a handle on that. In his defense clear coat IS sort of like plastic, lol XD. In all seriousness though. i think you will find the help you need here, just maybe not from me. if i think of something i can point out i will.

It’s a matter of knowing the materials and lights is all. BI is direct lighting, so you have no global illumination like you do in Cycles (what a lot of people don’t know is if you just “throw it in Cycles” you are using direct lighting also). Don’t forget about environment lighting, hdri, ambient occlusion, area lights, etc. Don’t ever use default materials, but know what you are changing. Specularity for instance…high intensity speaks for itself, but the hardness value is a different story. High values of hardness give you sharp specular, low spreads it out. You don’t even have to use specularity in this case. I can’t go into the materials much, or it would take me two days to explain the possibilities in BI. I’m rendering the “Cycles benchmark” BMW picture in BI right now, will post it shortly…

@ThorntonStrolia: Yes the material here isn’t very good, but just saying “plastic car?” isn’t helping him, it’s more along the lines of making fun of him

If he share his scene with us ill help him. I want to see what he’s done or what he hasn’t
He can’t even make good model and studio so how can understand what im talk about lights and materials and scene?
if I were you, i would find a few tutorials about studio rendering.

to be clear, i wasnt saying in vultures defense, i was saying in jvai1’s defense, lol. i wasnt making fun of him, just to be clear.

@ThorntonStrolia: Haha, yes wasn’t saying you were

alright. just wanted to be clear. I was just pointing out that plasticy isnt nesecarely a bad thing if you think about it in the right light, since clear coat acrylic is plasticy in nature.

I have found my 2 years old car model so it isnt perfect.
3minutes setting, 3minutes render, 5minutes postproduction. The simpliest scene that you can make for blender internal render. I dont use standard lamps because they adds spectacular. IMO in studio render it doesn’t look good.

Result:

unfortunetly i save it as .jpg… woopsie…
It is only 11minutes. You can spend hours

@Vulture: What are “standard lamps”? And, if you don’t want specularity, why don’t you turn it off? Your render looks pretty decent though

Here’s the BMW by mpan3(thank you!) rendered in BI:

It’s not perfect, but it’s a start.
I used four area lights, only one supplying shadows(from above), two others have gamma at 2.2(facing the door and front), and another one is under the floor.
Environment lighting was on .8 (White). HDRI is faked by using plane arrays. The sky is every so slightly blue.
The only post-processing here is one fog glow node and one RGB curve node. No layers, .exr’s, etc. No GIMP Photoshop

By “standard lamps” i mean Point, Sun, Spot, Hemi, Area. ^ I completely forgot about that. You should add more fresnel. tires looks realy bad.
Only post pro in my render is vignetting and aberration ^^

Yes, as I said it’s not perfect, but that was my first render of this(and my first of a car, period). If this person who started this thread doesn’t come back, it will be my last too, I’ve got my own things going on, and none of them have anything to do with cars

i do like your car paint shader. i dont use the internal, at all, well not anymore, so the smoke shader for my viper drift scene is gonna be a little tough but im doing the rest in cycles so it shouldnt be too hard. im gonna fav this url incase i ever find myself in need of an internal car shader.

Thanks! My Little Pony thinks it’s crap, but it’s not bad for my first BI car render. Maybe I’ll actually get around to making a car someday(but I doubt it)

as far as internal goes, its prety damn good. you cant expect too much better from internal. i think his issue is more with your lighting and is blaming it on your shader. your shader could use some work, sure, but nothing is perfect, no matter how good it gets. like i said, i think vultures issue is more with lighting, maybe even topo, but not shader.

Deleted before ranting

Anyway…where is this guy who started this fiasco?!

ThorntonStrolia, I spend 11minutes on it. and i dont wanna waste more time, ive done this project 2 years ago. I dont use BI since 2009.
topo is bad, thats right.

You should say My Little Pony fag…
I didn’t say that is a crap. I think you should finish it off.

Propably he ditched this project.

Hi there thanks for all your comments and jokes !!!
